Martyrs Set To Re-Sign Defender Keddle

Merthyr boss Garry Shephard confirmed late last night that former Martyr Paul Keddle will re-join the Martyrs from Newport County, subject to paperwork formalities.

24-year-old Keddle previously spent five seasons at Merthyr, and featured as a second-half substitute in the Newport side which travelled to Penydarren Park for a pre-season friendly match this summer.

Keddle was born in Brecon, Powys, in 1983 and started his career at local Welsh Football League side Brecon Corinthians. A move then followed to the Welsh Premier League with Rhayader Town, before a five-season spell with the Martyrs where he gained semi-professional recognition with Wales.

Paul Keddle (photo courtesy of: Mike Donovan)Paul then went on to Bath City in 2007 and made 13 starts and 18 substitute appearances, going to Welsh Premier outfit Carmarthen Town in the winter of 2008. New County manager Dean Holdsworth snapped up Keddle in June of this year, before his return to Penydarren Park.

Giving his thoughts to www.merthyrfootball.co.uk, Garry Shephard said of his latest signing:

"Paul Keddle brings an added strength to the current squad. His defensive qualities improved during his time at Merthyr, and further improved whilst he was playing with Bath City and Carmarthen Town."

"I don't think Paul got a fair crack at Newport but we spoke to him this week and he was eager to join us and start playing first team football. He has a good character and is a born leader. His qualities will be a boost to the team, and the signing will be confirmed once we get the necessary forms from Newport."

"Paul will go straight into the first team for Saturday's trip to Cambridge City."
