FT: Merthyr Tydfil 4-1 Stourbridge

Updated: Tuesday 26th August 2008, 14:05pm GMT

Merthyr Tydfil 4-1 Stourbridge

The Martyrs got their first win of the season on Saturday, at the fourth attempt, and in fine style with player-manager Garry Shephard grabbing a brilliant hat-trick.

Shephard opened the scoring for Merthyr with a diving header after 28 minutes, heading in Steve Williams right-wing cross, after good work from Sam O'Sullivan.

An entertaining first half saw the Martyrs go in 1-0 up at the break.

Half-time: Merthyr Tydfil 1-0 Stourbridge

Merthyr continued to dominate in the second period and Shephard scored his second on 63 minutes, finishing low into the net from just outside the six yard box.

A flowing move from the right wing five minutes later saw Shephard fire home from close range to complete his first hat-trick in the Southern league for several seasons.

Stourbridge substitute Ryan Broadhurst pulled one back for the visitors with twenty minutes left.

Marcus Griffiths restored the Martyrs' three-goal cushion in the 88th-minute to finish the scoring at 4-1 - a result which saw Garry Shephard's side move off the foot of the table and within a point of the safety zone.
