FT: Cambridge City 3-0 Merthyr Tydfil

The Martyrs failed to take their chances at The City Ground as Gary Roberts' Cambridge City recorded a 3-0 victory, courtesy of goals from Dave Theobald (35), Neil Midgley (72) and Scott Neilson (87).

New signing from Newport County, defender Paul Keddle, went straight into the Martyrs strating line-up, but player-manager Garry Shephard did not feature. Ross Porter and Adam Lewis both found themselves on the substitutes bench.

Rooted to the bottom of the Southern Premier table, an injury-hit Merthyr side now have a massively important match against struggling Stourbridge at Penydarren Park on Bank Holiday Monday (kick-off: 3pm).. [more]

Richard Bennett's Match Report

To follow..

After the match Martyrs assistant manager Danny Carter said:

"It was a poor performance in ceratin areas today, though I thought that we were doing well at 1-0 down. We were disappointed with their second goal and how the linesman didn't give it, being a yard offside, I don't know. But I think we were coping at 2-0 and posing a threat ourselves until the third went in and it was a case of men against boys."

"We know how passionate the Merthyr fans are, and myself and Garry Shephard are passionate ourselves. We're obviously as disappointed as the fans with our start to the season, but we are working very hard to put things right."

"Individually I think we're ok, it's in key areas that we're being punished right now and there's a lot of pressure. We need the fans to stick by the lads, their encouragement helps a great deal."

Garry Shephard and Danny Carter

The Martyrs now have a vitally important Bank Holiday Monday fixture against fellow strugglers Stourbridge on August 25th (kick-off: 3.00pm). [more]
